Sahel states reject Nigerian leader’s security claims
The Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso, Jean Marie Traoré, summoned the Nigerian chargé d’affaires in Ouagadougou following remarks by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu criticizing the security situation in the three member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). This diplomatic move took place on August 7, as confirmed by Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting was held in the presence of the chargés d’affaires from Mali and Niger, both AES member nations, to underscore a unified and resolute response from the alliance. The dispute stems from a July 30 statement by Tinubu, who suggested that instability in the AES region was exacerbating security challenges in Nigeria, attributing this to a rise in terrorist attacks and kidnappings across his country’s borders.
Speaking on behalf of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, Traoré expressed the alliance’s deep disappointment with Tinubu’s remarks, calling them inaccurate and inconsistent with the spirit of solidarity expected among neighboring nations facing a shared threat. He described the Nigerian leader’s analysis as hasty, overly simplistic, and surprising.
« We expected a more accurate portrayal of the security landscape, rather than shifting blame to neighboring countries, » Traoré stated. « This risks fueling misunderstandings and frustration among peoples bound by history, geography, and brotherhood. »
He emphasized that the AES nations are not responsible for their own security challenges, though they bear the consequences. « The true adversaries lie elsewhere. We must act as brothers in arms, united against a common threat, » he added.
Despite the strong reaction, Traoré clarified that the AES’s response was not driven by confrontation but by a commitment to open dialogue. « Our goal is to foster sincere cooperation, as only through collective efforts can we effectively address the region’s enduring security threats, » he noted.
The Nigerian chargé d’affaires acknowledged the AES ministers’ message, pledging to relay it to Abuja. He praised their focus on dialogue and solidarity in combating terrorism while recognizing the alliance’s ongoing efforts against this scourge.
