Togo’s president Faure Gnassingbé congratulates Yoweri Museveni at inauguration ceremony

The President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbé, made an official visit to Kampala, Uganda, on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to attend the inauguration of Yoweri Museveni, who was re-elected in the January 15 general election.

Under the theme “Safeguarding achievements and advancing toward upper-middle-income status”, the ceremony brought together African heads of state alongside delegations from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

During the event, Faure Gnassingbé extended his congratulations to Yoweri Museveni, wishing him success in his new term. In response, the Ugandan leader praised the Togolese president’s presence, highlighting it as a testament to the strong cooperative ties between Lomé and Kampala.

Discussions also covered regional security challenges, particularly in the Great Lakes area. As the African Union’s mediator for the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Faure Gnassingbé reiterated his commitment to ongoing consultations with regional stakeholders to foster a lasting resolution to the conflict.

Yoweri Museveni also commended Togolese diplomacy, noting its emphasis on dialogue and peaceful solutions. This visit underscores Togo’s dedication to playing an active role in Africa’s peacebuilding and regional integration efforts.
