On Monday, 22 June 2026, at the African Union City in Kinshasa, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, welcomed Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who also serves as the Chairperson of the African Union, for a state visit.
The two heads of state first held a private discussion, followed by an expanded bilateral meeting. Their talks focused on strengthening ties between the DRC and Burundi across several shared areas of interest.
A key topic was the security situation in eastern DRC, where Burundi has been supporting the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) against Rwandan military occupation forces.
Both leaders also addressed joint efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak (Bundibugyo strain), stressing the need to boost cross-border surveillance to contain the virus’s spread.
On Tuesday, 23 June, President Ndayishimiye is scheduled to visit the Central African Cultural and Artistic Centre before meeting with the taskforce coordinating the health response to the Ebola resurgence, which has hit three eastern provinces especially hard.
A joint press conference between the two presidents is planned for the same Tuesday to conclude the high-level meeting.
