40 nations back Morocco’s Sahara sovereignty at Geneva human rights council

Forty countries reaffirmed their support this week for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern territories during the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The 40 nations expressed their backing through a joint statement delivered by Morocco’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Omar Zniber, emphasizing that the Sahara issue remains aligned with the political path advocated by the UN under the Security Council’s guidance.

The communiqué highlighted that Morocco’s autonomy initiative stands as a serious and realistic framework for achieving a lasting political solution to the conflict. It also reinforced support for implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which aims to revive the political process with the participation of all concerned parties.

The supporting countries commended Morocco for developing the autonomy proposal and its commitment to integrating residents from the Tindouf camps, ensuring their rights alongside those of other citizens. They also praised Morocco’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, noting it demonstrates a positive commitment to advancing and protecting rights and freedoms.

The statement underscored that the opening of consulates by multiple countries in Laayoune and Dakhla reflects growing international support for Morocco, fostering development, investment, and regional cooperation in the southern provinces. The group concluded by stressing that resolving the conflict would serve as a catalyst for integration and development across African and Arab regions.
