border security crackdown sees 24 migrants stopped near Kassouala

A routine check at a key border crossing in northern Bénin has uncovered an unauthorized migration attempt. On the morning of June 16, 2026, police officers stationed at the Okpara bridge in Kassouala intercepted a convoy of 24 individuals, including a suspected local guide.

Border patrols in the northeastern region of Bénin struck gold during a standard morning inspection. At approximately 8:30 a.m., officers at the Okpara bridge checkpoint in Kassouala halted a group of 23 Nigerian travelers, all of Hausa ethnicity, en route to Burkina Faso.

The migrants, who claimed to have set off from Tchaki in Nigeria, revealed they had walked to Boukouro, a Beninese village just short of the border, where they spent the night. Their stated destination? Artisanal gold mining sites across the border in Burkina Faso.

While all individuals presented valid identification documents, authorities remain suspicious about the journey’s true nature. Attention has turned to their guide—a 20-year-old Beninese national from Bassila, currently residing in Parakou—who is now under scrutiny for allegedly organizing the illegal crossing.

All detainees were transferred to the Tchaourou police station pending further investigation. Authorities are working to uncover whether this incident points to a larger migrant smuggling operation.
